Pokemon Journey
Part IV: Boulder Badge Ho
"Squirtle, Water Gun."
JJ called to the newly freshened pokemon. Good thing he picked up potions. He had reached Pewter City when he encountered one of the locals. The young boy used a Geodude, similar to what the Pewter City gym leaders used. It wasn’t any match for the water pokemon however as the stream of water forced it to fall and hit the ground hard. The Geodude did not get up.
"All Right," JJ shouted as Lisa looked on.
"I won!" JJ said smiling.
He looked around to see the boy and his Geodude had ran off. He took out Squirtle’s poke ball and pointed it at him.
"Squirtle return." JJ called as the turtle like pokemon went inside.
"The poke center is just over there." Lisa pointed out.
"Well lets go."
JJ said as the two walked towards the center. When they arrived one of the Nurse Joy’s greeted them.
"Hello" Joy said.
"How may I help you?"
"Can you get my pokemon back to full strength?"
"Sure," Joy replied.
"I’ll need your poke balls."
"Here you go." JJ said as he handed over the four poke balls. Joy set them on a platter.
"I’ll be right back. Why don’t you sit down?"
"Sure." JJ said as he and Lisa walked over to two chairs. Lisa was rather confused.
"Something wrong?" JJ asked.
"No, but I thought Nurse Joy worked in Viridian." Lisa said. JJ let out a chuckle.
"Did you ever read the Official Guide to the Pokemon League?" JJ asked.
"No."
"Nurse Joy, here and back in Viridian, are members of a huge family of identical sister working in poke centers all over the world. They all look the same, and they’re all named Joy." JJ explained.
"Oh!" Lisa said. Then another question came to mind.
"How did you know that?" She asked. JJ simply pulled out a book that said ‘Official Guide to the Pokemon League.’
"This is my reading material." JJ said. He looked at the clock as Joy approached. It read 7:30.
"Here’s your poke balls." Joy said holding the platter.
"Thanks." He said as he picked up the poke balls.
"Mind if we stay the night?" He asked. The gym wouldn’t be open at this time of day.
"Sure, I’ll take you to a room." Joy said. JJ set his watch for 8:00 AM.
Morning light arrived though the window and lit the room. JJ slowly sat up. Lisa slept in the bed across from him and was already dressed. JJ only had to put on his vest and belt. He double checked his poke balls and was ready to go.
"Don’t tell me." Lisa said.
"You want to go to the for the badge."
"After Breakfast." JJ said. Lisa was slightly shocked.
"I thought you’d go for the badge." Lisa said. JJ’s alarm went off and JJ pressed a button to stop it.
"Normally I would," JJ said as the alarm stopped.
"But the gym isn’t open till 9:00."
"Well let’s eat." Lisa said.
Name the three pokemon you can capture in Mt. Moon.
Soon the two left for the restaurant. They just got a quick meal. JJ looked at his watch. It was now 9:41 AM and the next stop was the local gym. The two soon found the gym. Nothing fancy, just a square chalk line ring in an enclosed arena. ‘Flint must like getting to the point.’ JJ thought as he walked to a chalk line box at the ring’s edge. Lisa walked over to the side to sit down. Only half the room was lit. The far half was dark, but JJ saw someone in a chair.
"I am here for a Boulder Badge!" He declared. The opposite room lit up as a bearded man stood up.
"You have to get past me first." Flint said.
"My pleasure. Choose your pokemon." JJ challenged as Flint stepped down into another chalk line box.
"I choose, Geodude." Flint said as he tossed the poke ball. When is hit the ground the rock pokemon appeared.
"Geo!"
"And I choose Squirtle." JJ said as he tossed the poke ball. When it landed the water pokemon was there.
"Squirt!"
"Geodude, Tackle."
Squirtle, Water Gun."
Geodude attempted to slam into the water pokemon, but the stream of water caused it pain and forced him into the ground.
"Geodude, return!" Flint called surprised at the ease of Geodude’s defeat. He decided to try a pokemon that was his only non-rock pokemon.
"Zubat, Go." This time as the ball hit a pokemon similar to a bat appeared.
"What’s that?" JJ asked. He never saw that pokemon before. He pulled out the pokedex.
"Zubat, a bat pokemon crossed between the flying and poison classes. It uses ultra sound screeches like a radar since it lacks eyes. It also uses those screeches as attacks."
"Zubat, Screech attack." The pitch and volume caused everyone in the arena, even Flint, to cover their ears. Squirtle couldn’t stand the sound and collapsed on the ground.
"Squirtle, return." Squirtle was pulled from battle. JJ grabbed another poke ball.
"Go Pikachu." In a flash the electric pokemon was ready to go.
"Pika."
"Pikachu, Thunder Shock." Pikachu then took a moment to charge and before Zubat could make a second attack Pikachu bolts had reached him and since he wasn’t grounded fell to the ground and passed out.
"Zubat, return" Zubat didn’t finish the battle but he took out a key player.
"Go, Onix." When the rock snake appeared JJ was at a lost. Squirtle was down. Pikachu more than likely couldn’t beat it. Caterpie wouldn’t make a dent in it. But Charmander had a chance. A good shot might win it.
"Pikachu, return." JJ didn’t want Onix to take advantage of his planning time.
"Go Charmander." JJ tossed the poke ball. The fire pokemon was ready for action.
"Charmander use your best Flame Thrower attack and roast him." In a only seconds Charmander’s flames were launched had reached Onix. The rock snake was being super heated. It wasn’t long before it crashed to the ground in pain.
"Onix, return." Flint was beaten. Well wasn’t the first time and more than likely not the last time.
"Excellent work young man. I had not expected this." Flint said some what impressed as the skill demonstrated. He took out a small object and crossed the ring towards JJ.
"You have earned the Boulder Badge."
"ALL RIGHT!!!" JJ had the first key to the league as he accepted the badge.
"Don’t get cocky young man, the league is still a long way ahead."
"But it’s a start." JJ replied.
"I guess it is." Flint said smiling. Lisa had walked up beside JJ.
"Now go on. There is much you need to learn, and this is not the place to learn it."
Soon the pair arrived back at the center for a break. JJ let out his pokemon so they could stretch their legs, including Caterpie, much to Lisa’s dislike. Squritle, after being healed, was having a conversation with Charmander. Pikachu was relaxing but Caterpie was up to something, and it had nothing to do with Lisa dislike for bugs. He soon crawled in front of JJ and pointed his head up.
"What are you doing?" The other pokemon turned to Caterpie as it started shooting silk over it’s body. Lisa fell backwards as she was scared stiff. JJ’s other pokemon where confused and other people in the center, even Nurse Joy, was watching the small pokemon. Soon the bug pokemon was covered in silk, and was shaped like a boomerang. The silk turn green and everyone wondered what happened. JJ pull out the pokedex and turned the volume up so everyone could here.
"Metapod, a cocoon pokemon. This evolved form of Caterpie can only harden it’s body against predators. It is a form taken before it’s final evolution."
"You O.K. Metapod?" JJ asked.
"Metapod." Was it’s only reply.
JJ sat down again as people went back to their business. He and Lisa would stay the night then go though Mt. Moon and head for Cerulean City and the second badge. It has been a big day. He got the Boulder Badge, and Caterpie evolved into Metapod. But this was the beginning of the journey. But he was ready for the next step. JJ was ready for battle and going on for more badges. Today is won. But what of tomorrow?
